Quick Facts Sheet

  • The Anne Arundel County Literacy Council (AACLC) is a volunteer, non-profit organization serving the residents of Anne Arundel County.

  • We provide free reading assistance to adults in Anne Arundel County reading at below a fifth grade level.

  • The AACLC is celebrating its 28th anniversary this year. It was started in 1977 by a group of six Laubach tutors who wanted to improve the quality of their community by providing free education services to individual citizens as well as clients of Second Genesis and the two Anne Arundel county detention centers.

  • The AACLC is a local branch of Laubach Literacy Action (LLA), a national literacy organization which has recently merged with Proliteracy America.

  • Volunteer Opportunities exist in the following areas: Tutoring in adult basic education Newsletter production Tutoring in English as a second language Public relations Grant writing Event Planning Tutor training Hospitality Student assessment Office Support Fundraising

  • Tutors are asked to volunteer approximately 2-4 hours per week, which includes lesson preparation and 1-2 one-hour tutoring session. The AACLC asks for tutors to commit to volunteering with the council for at least 6 months in order to achieve substantial student progress. Tutors typically conduct their lessons in quiet public areas, such as libraries, churches, or schools.

  • There are no pre-requisites for becoming a Laubach tutor, other than a comfort level with your own personal reading skills and a commitment to your student. In order to become a certified Laubach tutor, you must attend a 12 hour workshop sponsored by the Anne Arundel Literacy Council. New tutor training workshops are held three times a year in both Adult basic education and English as a second language.

  • The AACLC is not a government-sponsored program. All funding for our organization comes from private individuals, corporations, grants, and United Way Contributions.

  • The money we raise goes to support and expand our reading programs, including:

    • Tutor training workshops

    • Tutor and support services

    • Books and other lesson materials for students

    • Community outreach
